“Warm Up to CEU’s”

2002 CEU News Update

From “The CEU Evaluator”

Welcome to another year in Respiratory Therapy,

Just a few friendly reminders of what is a CEU, where to obtain them, how to make sure they are approved, and then what to do with them.  Please keep this letter and the enclosed “CEU Application” on hand throughout the year to refer to.  One point of reference, remember, I do not work at the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts (KSBHA).  I only contract to approve CEUs.   If you have other questions regarding your license, the best place to start is with the KSBHA.  If you have a CEU question, please contact me.  My contact information is at the end of this letter and on the “CEU Application” form.  Continuing education is a yearlong process.  Start attending or studying right away (April 1) for next year, do not wait until the end of the accrual period to try to hurry through.  Now on to business…

  1. 12 contact hours (CEUs) are needed for each year you renew. The accrual period runs the same as your license… April 1 to March 31.

  1. College courses of any kind DO NOT count for CEUs.

  1. ACLS, PALS, and NRP only count for lecture time, not testing time. BLS is NO LONGER approved.  If you take an instructor class, you may get CEUs for that lecture also, however, you do not receive CEUs for teaching any classes.

  1. If you are a clinical instructor for an approved respiratory school you may receive 3 hours of CEU each year.  Contact the school you instruct for, for further information.

  1. If the course (seminar) is American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) approved, it is accepted in Kansas, it does not need my approval. You may use your AARC transcript as proof of attendance or you should receive a certificate of attendance with the AARC approval on it.

  1. Internet and home study courses are accepted if they are AARC approved. However, you may not repeat the same course ever.

  1. If you attend a workshop or seminar (i.e. a nursing function) that isn’t approved for respiratory credit by the AARC, an approved respiratory provider, or me, then you will need to have it approved by me BEFORE you submit with your renewal. Follow the instructions on the CEU application form.

  1. Respiratory Providers are those facilities who have applied and been accepted to provide CEUs for respiratory therapy. There are approximately 22 across the state.  They will “advertise” their functions as approved for respiratory credit.  When you receive a certificate from them make sure it has a respiratory approval on it.

Gather your certificates up, take a look at them and make sure they are ready to attach to your GREEN renewal form.  If they have a respiratory approval (refer to number 7 of this letter), then just attach to the GREEN renewal form and send to the KSBHA.  If they do not, send to me first following the instructions on the “CEU Application” form.  I will then approve or disapprove and send back to you.  DO NOT SEND ME YOUR GREEN LICENSE RENEWAL AND DO NOT SEND THE CEU APPLICATION TO THE KSBHA.  Please allow plenty of time for this process to be completed. I do not have a fax machine and will not accept faxes.

Well I hope this has helped warm you up towards your CEU gathering.  If you have questions, please contact me.  As I have become pretty handy on the computer, email is the fastest way to get a response, but phone and snail mail will work also.

I bid you ado for another year, Julia Downs, a.k.a “The CEU Lady”
